The two most common culprits are corn and wheat. They're fillers that help the manufacturer's bottom line and make your pet feel full. But those grains are also thought to contribute to common pet illnesses like tummy upset, diarrhea, allergies and skin problems. The bottom line is this: dogs and cats in the wild don't hunt ears of corn or wheat stalks.

Other questionable ingredients you might find in some mass-produced pet foods: Ethoxyquin, a preservative that is also used in pesticides; butylhydroxytoluene (BHT), an antioxidant that at least one study showed was linked to cancerous tumors in lab mice; and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), an additive that the World Health Organization says shows sufficient evidence of causing cancer in lab animals.
